Dreams often feel like puzzles that our minds present while we sleep. They can be vivid, confusing, or even unsettling. Yet, these nightly stories carry messages from our subconscious and spirit, offering insights into our emotions, fears, and desires. Learning to interpret dreams can help us understand ourselves better and guide us through life's challenges. As someone who experiences almost nightly vivid dreams, I have always found exploring their meanings fascinating and, over the years, have learnt to trust the wisdom of their powerful insights and truths. Interested? Read on....

How Dreams Connect to Your Subconscious and Spirit

Dreams are not random. They reflect what your subconscious mind processes during the day and what your spirit may want you to notice. The subconscious stores memories, emotions, and unresolved issues that we all experience as we travel through life, which can sometimes surface in symbolic forms during sleep. Spirit, depending on your beliefs, may use dreams to communicate guidance or warnings to you when you are asleep and more able to "receive".

For example, dreaming about water often relates to emotions. Calm water might suggest peace, while turbulent water could indicate emotional turmoil. Recognising these symbols helps you decode what your inner self is trying to express.

Common Dream Symbols and Their Meanings

Understanding dream symbols is key to unlocking their messages. Here are some common symbols that you may recognise from your dreams and what they often represent:

  • Falling: Feeling out of control or anxious about a situation.

  • Flying: Desire for freedom or escape from physical, emotional or mental imitations.

  • Being chased: Avoiding a problem or fear.

  • Teeth falling out: Concerns about appearance, communication, or loss.

  • Houses: The self or different aspects of your personality.

These symbols vary depending on personal experiences, so it’s important to reflect on what they mean for you personally.

Real-Life Examples of Dream Interpretation

Example 1: The Locked Door

A woman dreamed repeatedly about a locked door she couldn’t open. She felt frustrated and anxious in the dream. Reaching out to someone skilled in dream interpretation, she realised the door symbolised a part of her life she was avoiding, which turned out to be her creative potential. The locked door represented her fear of failure. Having this insight, she began to explore the varied artistic pursuits open to her and found the fulfilment in her creativity she'd been "dreaming" of.

Example 2: The Lost Child

A man dreamt of losing a child in a crowded place, which, as you can imagine, caused him great distress. After consultation with an expert in dream interpretation, he was able to connect the child to his own inner vulnerability and innocence. His dream was a message from his spirit to pay attention to his emotional needs, as he tended to neglect his self-care during stressful times

How to Begin Interpreting Your Own Dreams

  1. Keep a dream journal beside your bed

Write down your dreams as soon as you wake up. Details fade quickly, so capturing them helps you recognise patterns.

  1. Identify emotions

Note how you felt during the dream, i.e. scared, angry, tearful, etc. Emotions often reveal the core message for you.

  1. Look for symbols

Focus on objects, people, or actions that stand out. Ask what they might represent in your life.

  1. Connect to your waking life

Think about recent events or feelings that relate to your dream’s content.

  1. Trust your intuition

Your personal meaning matters most. You can use general symbols as a guide, but learn to trust what feels true to you and listen to your inner voice and your senses.

When Dreams Carry Spiritual Messages

Now to my favourite dreams. Some dreams may feel different, as they may be clearer, more vivid, or leave a strong impression by remaining in your memory on waking. These can often be spiritual messages meant to guide or warn you. For example:

  • Recurring dreams that repeat until you take the action you're being guided to.

  • Dreams with spiritual figures or symbols like light, angels, or sacred animals.

  • Dreams that provide solutions to problems or inspire creativity.

Pay attention to these dreams. They're not random and often urge you to reflect more deeply on what's happening currently in your life and the opportunity to make any necessary changes.

Tips for Enhancing Dream Recall and Interpretation

  • Create a relaxing bedtime routine to improve the quality of your sleep.

  • Avoid screens before bed to reduce distractions – yes, this means your mobile phone too!

  • Set an intention before sleeping to remember your dreams.

  • Meditate or practise mindfulness to connect with your inner self before you settle down to sleep.

  • Discuss your dreams with trusted friends or someone skilled in dream interpretation for new insights and perspectives.

Final Thoughts on Unlocking Your Dreams

Dreams offer a unique window into your subconscious and spirit and offer you the opportunity to explore the symbols and emotions revealed to you, enabling you to uncover hidden truths and guidance. Why not begin with simple steps like journaling and reflecting more deeply on your feelings? Over time, you will find this helps you build a stronger connection with your inner world and gain deeper clarity in your waking life.
